The Literacy Group of Waterloo Region (TLG) is seeking Board members
The Literacy Group (TLG) of Waterloo Region is a community based organization that provides accessible literacy training services to empower adults to reach their goals and improve their quality of life.
Become a Board Member
TLG works with adults 18+ who are upgrading their skills in reading, writing, numeracy, computer & workplace essential skills through 1 to 1 tutoring and small group facilitation. We have a large volunteer tutor base that helps us deliver our programs. We provide assessments, individualized learning plans and support to adults to help them work towards employment, further training and education or increased independence. We serve Kitchener, Cambridge and rural Waterloo counties. The ideal candidates will have Fundraising and/or Event Planning skills.
Are you:
- a person who wants to serve the community and make a positive difference
- a person who wants to play an active role in helping the agency plan for and meet the needs of adults with low levels of literacy
- able to commit 3-6 hours a month
- reside in Kitchener, Cambridge or the Waterloo region
- have a genuine interest in literacy

The Board of Directors role is to:
- Direct the organization according to its by-laws
- Provide direction and supervision to the Executive Director
- Formulate and approve organizational policy and plans
- Ensure implementation of funding strategies
- Oversee financial management
- Keep abreast of community needs, health and social
- Represent and advocates TLG to the public, stakeholders and selected communi
- Ensures the agency and any planning meets the corporation and funder mandates.
A Board member’s responsibility is to:
- Commit to a 3 year term, renewable for a 2nd term (maximum 6 years)
- Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in monthly board meetings (except July-August)
- Participate in individually defined small workgroups or ad hoc committees
- Serve in a volunteer capacity, without remuneration or profit.
While TLG Waterloo Region welcomes all interested applicants, those representing minority groups, the Waterloo and surrounding areas of the region and / or with fundraising experience are encouraged to apply.
