On September 22nd we hosted our first Volunteer Appreciation dinner. It was a chance for the staff and board of TLG to say thank you to our wonderful volunteers for their dedication and service. The night was a great success. We handed out length of service certificates for all of our tutors. Bill Ashwell is our longest serving tutor having volunteered with us for 17 years. The Short Cuts, a barbershop quartet led by our tutor Allan Wilson, provided entertainment. The pasta and chili catered by The Working Centre were delicious. An ice cream bar with all the fixings rounded out the meal. The overall response was to make this an annual event. So, keep a look out for next year's invitation. Rodding for Reading a Great Success.

The show was hosted by The Lead Kings, in support of TLG. It was a fun-filled day for the whole family. There were classic cars and motorcycles, door prizes, games, fun for kids, a book sale, a raffle, a share-the-wealth draw and more. We're hoping to make Rodding for Reading an annual event. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped us out and to everyone who came to share the day with us. Please click here to go to our photo gallery and see some images from the show.

Mercy became a Canadian citizen on Thursday September 22. Mercy started with us on a work placement through Focus on Ethnic Woman. She became a full-fledge member of our staff when she completed her placement. Mercy has since moved on to a different agency in an administrator role. Congratulations Mercy, you're an inspiration.
Engage, Enrich, Empower

The theme of this year’s Annual General Meeting was Engage, Enrich, Empower; a theme that fit very well with The Literacy Group’s mission. Our 12th Annual General Meeting was all about how we Engage our volunteers and students, how we Enrich our learners and communities, and how we Empower them to take their next steps into the future. In return, as an organization, we are Engaged by the board with many different initiatives, we are Enriched by developing new curriculums and the board Empowers us to make sure we deliver superior programming. The Annual General Meeting recognized many individuals including Nick Boertien,Fran Maser, Sneha and Baresh Juiker, David Jenkins, and Sergeant Jeff Saunders for their wonderful contributions to our organization. Our award recipients included our Student of the Year, Alia S; our Tutor of the Year, Tracy –Lynne Aihers, and our volunteer of the Year, Bill Rattray. Two of our student guest speakers, Joel E and Gordon L inspired everyone with their incredible life stories and talked about how being a student with the Literacy Group has changed their lives. Both speakers showed us all what it is like to be Engaged, Enriched, & Empowered. Please Click here to see our 2011 Annual Report
