He has over 20 years of practical business experience in the area of Finance and Operations. He holds an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto. Peter lives in the Waterloo Region with his wife and three children. The family enjoys traveling and skiing during the winter months |

James Hilgendorff, Vice President
James Hilgendorff is a graduate of Wilfred Laurier University with a BBA degree. He has been with The Literacy Group for the past three years and enjoys applying his skills as a professional accountant to the not for profit sector. He has over 10 years of experience working in various finance roles. Currently he works as a Finance manager at The Economical Insurance Group in Waterloo. In his spare time, James enjoys travel, bowling, curling and summer barbecues with family and friends. |

Evelyn Peng, Treasurer Evelyn holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Waterloo, specializing in Biotechnology. She is a Chartered Accountant and has over four years of experience in financial and control audits. Evelyn recently joined the Economical Insurance Group in the finance department. Prior to that, Evelyn articled at Ernst&Young LLP as a senior accountant. Evelyn has a passion for the arts and is an avid painter in her spare time. Combining her skills in financial reporting and interest in teaching and mentoring, Evelyn is excited for the opportunity to serve our community through TLG. |

Doreen Shantz, Director Doreen Shantz is a Professor Emeritus from the Faculty of Education, University of Windsor, currently residing in Kitchener. She has a BA from Wilfrid Laurier, and an MEd and EdD from the University of Toronto. She taught courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the areas of personal relations, leadership and change initiation. Prior to her professorship in Windsor, she was a teacher, vice principal and principal with the Waterloo District School Board. She enjoys traveling, reading, walking, golfing, and red wine, as well as spending time with family and friends. |

Nancy Valla, Director Nancy is a Certified Professional Human Resources Practitioner, CHRP and works as a Director, Human Resources for a large local automation company. She has experience in general and strategic Human Resources practices, policies and procedures. Nancy lives in Kitchener with her husband and soon to be three children. Nancy loves to spend time with family and friends, traveling and working out. |

Crystal Brown, Director Crystal has a B.A. From the University of Waterloo and spent a number of years in Human Resources as a Certified Human Resources Professional for local hi-tech and insurance companies before pursuing her passion: teaching. Crystal is now a teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board and The Upper Grand District School Board. She is also actively involved as a language instructor at Conestoga College. In her spare time, Crystal coaches her children's soccer teams, reads and travels. She lives in Kitchener with her husband and two children. |

Mike Farwell, Director Mike has spent the past 16 years in broadcast media, most recently as a reporter and talk show host with 570 News in Kitchener. He is also part of the station's coverage of Kitchener Rangers hockey. Mike is a member of the Kitchener Public Library Board (first vice-chair), K-W Oktoberfest (chair, Public Relations) and is actively involved with Cystic Fibrosis Canada as a member of the steering committee for its largest annual fundraiser, the Great Strides Walk. Robert Johnson, Director For the past 15 years Robert has contributed to the design of numerous medical products, mostly in the area of image assisted technologies. He has managed design verification and quality assurance teams and has developed policies that govern the design, validation and risk management of products that meet various medical standards. Currently, Robert is a consultant in the area of human factors in medical product validation. Robert has a passion for education and has taught at the University of Waterloo and has been a small group tutor with The Literacy Group since 2006. |
